This is a myth because the triangular symbol is just an identification code for manufacturers to know the kind of plastic used for a particular product. Some would say that they do not segregate themselves because for sure all the rubbish goes to the landfill. This is so wrong. In fact, millions are spent on recycling sites so that our rubbish will be greatly reduced. Australia is even known to be the top recyclist of newspapers. On a daily basis, recycled materials are being made into new goods. It is very important not to put your regular rubbish into your recycling bins because segregating will be costly, entailing more labor costs and more workers. Moreover, you put the recycling workers at risk by exposing them to rotting or toxic rubbish which should have been disposed responsibly.

 

There is also a widespread belief that old growth forests are being harvested to make newspapers. In Australia, the newspapers are made of an average of 30% recycled material and the remainder is made of wood fiber, which is debris from thinning and sourced from re-grown timber. Furthermore, construction and housing timber is also sourced from sustainably grown timber forest. Since 1991 and long before the environmentalist campaign, Australia has stopped using old growth wood in its newspapers. 

 

Moreover, Australia is a huge country so people will naturally think that it has a vast area for landfills so there really is no urgent need to recycle. True that Australia is one big place but because of many primary population sites, the landfills are placed in very distant places meaning more fuel to burn just to transport our rubbish. The more energy we consume, the more impact it has on our environment.

 

Recycling has lots of benefits other than reducing our rubbish, it is cost and energy efficient. It also supports a sustainable lifestyle, by not depleting our natural resources and just re-using what can still be used or re-manufactured. We can go to our council’s recycling collection bin, but there are many other recycling places as well. Post offices, restaurants, supermarkets, mobile phone stores are just a few on the list of places where we can bring our recyclables.
